The Society of Cardiology of the Russian Federation (SCRF) has been created in 1962. The first chairmen of the SCRF were professors A.M.Damir and A.S.Smetnev. The Society organized meetings devoted to actual for cardiologists scientific, organizational and practical questions of medical care. The first All-Russian Congress of Cardiologists was held in 1968 in Voronezh.The current status and perspectives of cardiological service in the Russian Federation, diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease and pulmonary hypertension were discussed at the second Congress (Saratov), problems of arterial hypertension - at the third Congress (1985). At the fourth Congress in Penza an alternative elections of the SCRF President had taken place for the first time. According to the results of a secret ballot the first President of SCRF became professor Victor A.Lyusov (Moscow) and the Vice-President - professor Lyudmila I.Katelnitskaya (Rostov-on-Don).
In May 1993 a decision was taken to launch a Journal of the SCRF - Russian Cardiological Journal.
In 1993 the Society of Cardiology of the Russian Federation became a constant member of the European Society of Cardiology with a right of deciding vote. In 1994 the Society of Cardiology of the Russian Federation has been registered as a member of the World Heart Federation.
The fifth All-Russian Congress of Cardiologists was held in 1996 in Chelyabinsk. At the General Assembly the SCRF Board was elected: President - professor Victor A.Lyusov; Vice-Presidents: professor L.I.Katelnitskaya (Southern Federal District, Rostov-on-Don), professor Y.M.Pozdnyakov (Central and Northwest Federal Districts, Zhukovsky), professor O.F.Kalev (Ural and Siberian Federal Districts, Chelyabinsk), professor R.T.Libenzon (Far Eastern Federal District, Vladivostok). The new Charter of the Society has been discussed and accepted.
At the sixth All-Russian Congress of Cardiologists (Moscow, 1999) the new Board of Society was elected: President – academician of the Russian Àcademy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), professor Raphael G. Oganov, Honorary Presidents - academician of the RAMS, professor E.I.Chazov and professor V.A.Lyusov.
The first Russian National Congress of Cardiologists has been held in October 2000 with a big success. Since then the Russian National Congress of Cardiologists has became annual.
The activities of the SCRF are carried out by 29 sections and 3 working groups. More than 1000 cardiologists are now members of the SCRF. At the same time they are members of the European Society of Cardiologists. The SCRF includes also Associated Societies having similar purposes–National Society on Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (President - professor Y.M.Pozdnyakov), the Society of Specialists on Heart Failure (President - corresponding member of the RAMS, professor E.V.Shlyahto), Russian Medical Society on Arterial Hypertension (President - professor I.E.Chazova), the Russian Antihypertensive League (President – professor A.O.Conradi) and the Russian National Society of Atherosclerosis (President - corresponding member of the RAMS, professor V.V.Kuharchuk).
